Plus they come in a lot of cute colors and look pretty snazzy too. I’ve tried other filters from the Lifestraw to the MSR Mini hand pump and this Grayl filter beats them hands down. While I almost always carry my Lifestraw, it is super impractical to use and it is also like sucking water through a cocktail stirrer, only worse. The Grayl filter also filters out viruses and some chemical impurities in addition to the larger particulates such as Giardia parasites. It is fast, easy to use and is the size of a standard water bottle. There is no reason to risk getting infected if you’ve got this with you along for a run.

When you’re shopping for gifts for trail runners, a neck gaiter is basically perfect.
Consider a plan from TrainingPeaks as it offers the ability to track your data and get a little more in-depth with your workouts. If you hike or run on snowpack a lot I would like to suggest Kahtoola MicroSpikes or NanopSpikes. They work the best for corduroy snow conditions and snowy trails. They are easy to use and they slip on over all kinds of running footwear. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm still a fan of having my headphones connected to each other by a wire when I trail run with some sort of over-ear loop. I've found that these tend to give me the least grief as I'm hopping through terrain while trying to mess with controlling volume, etc.

The HOKA Mafate Speed 4 is quite frankly, a masterpiece of trail running engineering and anyone receiving these as a gift is one seriously lucky trail runner.
Another item I recommend is the book referred to in the podcast – The Incomplete Book of Running. Tailwind Nutrition was one of the first running nutrition options I tried as a runner and it's a brand I keep coming back to. A brand coming out of Durango, a current favorite from this Colorado-based company are their single-serving stick packs. They offer them in bundles designed to let athletes try their wide range of options, but I really love them for the sake of connivence when packing light on the trail.
However, this is another piece of emergency gear I always carry with me since it is so light weight and has almost a magical way of keeping your head warm. It’s also tight enough that you can pull it on underneath your hat so you don’t look quite so strange when wearing it. I’d recommend this for any ultrarunner’s pack since it’s easy to pack and can fix a really unpleasant cold situation quickly. My hands get super cold easily, so a good pair of gloves is an absolute essential for a winter run. Most often, I use one of the 'recovery mix' varieties when I'm in need of quick calories and protein once I'm back to the trailhead post-run or fourteener hike. They might not look fancy, but great gloves make for a highly valued gift for trail runners. That said, if you’re not into trail running yourself, it can be easy to get lost in all the possible gear options.
